Diplomatic missions of Palestine

Diplomatic missions of Palestine

On 15 November 1988, the Palestinian National Council of the Palestine Liberation Organization, sitting in Algiers, adopted the Palestinian Declaration of Independence, unilaterally proclaiming the State of Palestine within the former British Mandate of Palestine, while not explicitly declaring its boundaries or claimed territory. At the time, the State of Palestine was not a "de facto" or "de jure" entity. The State of Palestine retains an unclear international status, with some states recognizing it "de jure" while it has no clear "de facto" status. Owing to its contested international position, many world capitals host both an Embassy of Palestine and an Embassy of Israel. Today, the State of Palestine is recognized by around 100 countries, who conduct relations with it through the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), which was established in 1994 by the Oslo Accords. Numerous other countries do not recognize the State of Palestine as such, but do conduct diplomatic relations with the PNA in its capacity as an interim governmental body representing the Palestinian people. Most major European countries, the United States and Canada do not recognize the State of Palestine, but have varying levels of official relations with the PNA.

In many countries that recognized the State of Palestine, the PNA maintains an Embassy of the State of Palestine. In countries that have not, it maintains a Mission or General Delegation, some with diplomatic status and others without.
