Armand Mouyal

Armand Mouyal

Armand Mouyal (October 16, 1925, in Paris, FranceJuly 15, 1988) was a French epee fencer.

Fencing career

Mouyal began fencing in the early 1950s, and was as skilled with the foil as with the épée (though he chose to compete internationally in the latter).

National Championships

Mouyal, a French police officer, captured French national Individual Épée titles in 1952, 1953, 1954, 1957, and 1959.

World Championships

Mouyal won the World Individual Epee Championship in 1957. [http://sports123.com/fen/mw-ep.html]

The French gendarme was also a key factor in leading his national Épée team to 7 World Championships Team medals: gold in 1951; silver 1953, 1955, 1961, 1963; and bronze 1954 and 1958.

World Rankings

Mouyal was ranked No. 5 in the world in 1955, and 8th in 1956.

Olympics

At the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games, he was eliminated in the 1st round of the individual event while the French team reached the 2nd round.

At the 1956 Melbourne Games and helped lead France to the bronze medal in the team épée competition. He also competed in the individual event, and advanced to the semifinals.

At the 1960 Rome Games, the French épée team was eliminated from the competition in the 2nd round. He reached the finals of the individual competition, but finished in 7th place. One of his teammates in 1956 and 1960 was Yves Dreyfus.

Hall of Fame

Mouyal, who was Jewish, was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1988. [http://www.jewishsports.net/BioPages/ArmandMouyal.htm]
