The theatre company was founded in 1988 at the Walnut Street Theatre Studio by Terrence J. Nolen, Amy Murphy and Aaron Posner where it held two seasons. The company then moved to the St. Stephen Performing Arts Center after its second season. The company purchased a 19th Century building in 1995 in the Old City of Philadelphia and renovated it to create two performing spaces.cite web
