Jean Gabriel Marie or Jean Gabriel-Marie (1907 – 1970) was a French composer. His works included the opera "Mirèio", which was awarded the "Prix de l'Académie des Arts, Lettres, et Sciences" shortly after its premier in 1939. The composition was based on the Provençal poem that inspired
Gounod 's opera "Mireille". He wrote "Suite provençale" in six movements, which is occasionally performed, based of themes from the opera. Chamber music and organ works are significant among his other compositions. He directed of the Institut Gabriel-Marie inMarseille for many years until his death at age 63.Jean Gabriel Marie was son of (Jean) Gabriel-Marie, (b.

His works include "La Cinquantaine" ("The Golden Wedding", 1887) for cello and piano, for octet, and in various other arrangements. He also composed many dance pieces, notably the waltz "Sous les firnes" ("Under the Ash Trees", 1884) and the highly original polka "Frais minois" ("Fresh Face"). "Sérénade Badine" achieved some popularity by its numerous arrangements, including those forsaxophone and piano, andcello and piano, as did other chamber works and light works for orchestra.ources
