World Championships
Gombos was World Champion, winning gold medals in individual sabre at the 1926 and 1927 European Championships, [http://sports123.com/fen/mw-sa.html] and gold medals in Team Sabre at the 1930 and 1931 European Championships.
The European Championships were predecessor to the World Championships, first held in 1937.
Olympics
He won a
gold medal in TeamSabre at the1928 Summer Olympics inAmsterdam , in which the Hungarian team went undefeated.In the individual competition, Gombos reached the finals but did not medal. After winning 8 of his 11 bouts, he finished in 5th place.
