Pentax introduced its firstdigital SLR camera in October 2003, the oddly named *ist D (pronounced "ist-dee"). The *ist D combines a high-performance, APS-sized 6.1 effective megapixel CCD image sensor,Pentax K mount , pentaprism viewfinder, and a 1.8 inch LCD monitor in one of the world's smallest and lightest digital SLR camera bodies. It was originally priced at $1,699 for the camera body, or $1899 with an 18-35mm lens.*ist DS
In September 2004, Pentax announced the *ist DS, similar to the *ist D but aimed at a lower price point to compete against the
Canon Digital Rebel (EOS 300D). It was priced at $899 for the camera body only, or $999 with a Pentax-DA Zoom 18-55mm F3.5-F5.6 AL lens.*ist DL
In February 2006, Pentax introduced the *ist DL.
This was the lightest DSLR camera in the world when it was first launched. It was an even lower price model after Pentax istDS. Pentax istDL uses pentamirror rather than original bright pentaprism as of istDS for the viewfinder. Focusing system was also downgraded to have 3 focusing points only.
