Schonert is a former 6'1", 195-lb. quarterback who played ten NFL seasons from 1980-1989 and was used primarily as a backup for the Chicago Bears, Cincinnati Bengals and Atlanta Falcons. While with the Bengals, Schonert was on the sidelines as a backup quarterback in Super Bowl XVI and Super Bowl XXIII, but did not play in either game. He played high school football at Servite High School in Anaheim , CA , and college football for Stanford University. Turk Schonert grew up in Garden Grove, Ca and played quarterback in youth football on a 12 year old championship team called the "Coyotes" in the Junior All Americam Football League in west Garden Grove. The year was 1969 and that team was undeafeted.

Schonert was the quarterbacks coach for the Bills until January 2008, when the previous offensive coordinator, Steve Fairchild, left to become head coach at Colorado State University.cite web|url=http://www.buffalobills.com/news/news.jsp?news_id=5784|title='Significant Change’ Likely With New Coordinator|last=Brown|first=Chris|accessdate=2008-01-16|date=January 4 2008]
