William Terrence Hennessey (born September 1, 1942 in Llay, Wales) was a Welsh international football player. He attained 39 caps for Wales and played his club football for Derby County. He also played for Birmingham City around 1960 as an attacking left half, then played with Nottingham Forest. He was an especially good distributor of the ball. He finished his playing days with non-league side Tamworth

History

After winning schoolboy honours, he joined ground-staff at Birmingham City. It was two months before he got a kick of a ball at St. Andrews, and then he didn't think he would make the grade. Terry did not click until he switched from inside forward to wing half, but then he quickly gained his first team place and, in 1962, his first full Welsh cap against the Republic of Ireland.

He won thirty-nine caps in all. This tall wing half dominated his area of the field, continually prodding his forwards into the attack with a series of perfect passes, that more than one critic has hailed Terry as a second Danny Blanchflower. Throughout 1963-1964 he fought like a lion in a struggling Birmingham team to help avoid relegation by a single point, forfeiting another Welsh cap to assist his club at a critical period during the season.

In November 1965 he was transferred to Nottingham Forest and became their captain. His role on the field varied, but he was always alive to the chance of creating goal scoring opportunities for others. A hard working and during his career accumulated a total of five hundred league appearances

He was forced to 'hang up his boots' at the end of the 1972 - 1973 campaign and initially went into coaching. Terry took a position as coach of the Tulsa Roughnecks in the early 1980s, when in 1983 they won the championship of the North American Soccer League (NASL).
