"Placostylus ambagiosus consobrinus" is a subspecies of very large, air-breathing land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusc in the family Bulimulidae, the bulimulus snails and their allies.

This subspecies of large land snail is critically endangered.

Distribution

This subspecies is endemic to Cape Maria van Diemen in Northland in the North Island of New Zealand. It is found in a similar area to "Placostylus ambagiosus worthyi", but is of more recent occurrence.

Habitat

This subspecies survives in a few places in flax clumps.

hell description

The shell is of distinctive shape, the spire being twice the height of the aperture, which is short and D-shaped. The basal lip, columellar and parietal processes are the best developed. The shell height is up to 86 mm, and the width up to 37 mm.

Conservation status

"Placostylus ambagiosus consobrinus" is classified by the New Zealand Department of Conservation as being "Nationally Critical".
