Elections for the Japanese House of Councillors were held in Japan in July 1989. The election result was a setback for ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) because of the Recruit scandal, 3% of consumption tax issue and involvement of Prime Minister Uno Sousuke in a sex scandal. The Social Democratic Party of Japan (SDPJ) emerged as the major winner. However, party could not make it permanent in July 1992 House of Councillors election by receiving fewer seats than the previous elections. Moreover, the reflection staged in House of Representatives elections, held in February 1990. LDP was in majority, nevertheless SDPJ (SDPJ was known as Japan Socialist Party (JSP) till 1991) garnered more seats than the previous 1986 election of the House of Representatives and in 1993, SDPJ failed to increase number of seats and not a single party including LDP was in majority.
