Wambui Otieno

Virginia Wambui Otieno is a female Kenyan politician who in July 2003 briefly rose to prominence due to her controversial marriage to stonemason Peter Mbugua. The marriage was controversial since Wambui Otieno was 67 whilst Peter Mbugua was 25. This marriage caused much debate amongst the Kenyan population. Wambui Otieno is sister to Kenya's former foreign Minister, Dr Munyua Waiyaki.

Mau Mau freedom fighter

She published an autobiography titled "Mau Mau Daughter: A Life History".

She had had 3 children while working as a Mau Mau freedom fighter and was arrested by the British colonial administration in 1961.

Legal case

In 1994 she was the subject of a legal case that established modern legal rights of wives in polygamous marriages vs. tribal law. [http://books.google.com/books?id=_94P-vtdhOIC]

Political life

At the 1997 elections she unsuccessfully vied for the Kamukunji Constituency parliamentary seat on NDP ticket [ [http://www.eck.or.ke/downloads/parliament1997.pdf Seagate Crystal Reports - parli ] ] .
