The river is c. 76 kilometres in lengthFact|date=March 2008 and is formed in the upperVal Formazza by the confluence of a number of torrents in the plain of Riale. The source of one of these, the Gries, is situated on the Italian southern side of theGries Pass ; another forms beneath thePasso di San Giacomo , others flow from littleAlpine lakes such as Lago Castel and Lago di Sabbione.South of
La Frua the water of the river plummets 143 meters over theToce Falls intoFormazza Valley , through which it flows before transversingValle Antigorio after another series of cascades. NearCrevola d'Ossola the riverDiveria discharges into the Toce. At this point the valley gets wider and is known asVal d'Ossola . The Toce flows through the main city of the valley,Domodossola , and thenVilladossola andOrnavasso . After a total of 76 kilometers the Toce then flows into Lake Maggiore.The major tributaries are the
