Seisiún

A seisiun or session is considered in Ireland to be a social gathering of friends and musicians with the intent of social interaction, the moderate consumption of alcohol and appreciation of local culture, most particularly music. The term craic is deemed to be synonymous with such occasions.

Origins

Seisiun, session, sesh or, in places; seshwan, with such an intent as above, all derive from the gaelic word seisiun, a loanword of the English language "session". The seisiun was traditionally an old Irish/gaeltacht custom, where the people would daily assemble and drink to the local musician after a long hard days work. However, with the decline of the gaeltacht areas in the 20th century, there has been a shift of sorts in the centre of the seisiun movement to the descendants of these people, based particularly in urban areas.

Modern Times

However, in modern times, "the sesh" has become more synonymous with young people seeking to socialise in a similar vein, and has sprouted it's own sub-culture, or cult. Popular films such as Animal House, Wayne's World and Shaun of the Dead among such sitcoms as Black books are all thought to embody this seisiun spirit and champion the cause.

Favoured Beverages

These days, several brands have become prominent among seisiuneers. For example, Guinness remains a staple of any seisiun, as do the cheaper lagers namely Dutch Gold, Harp, Vodka particularly on a Knacker Seisiun. However, in pubs Fosters, Miller and Budweiser come to the fore, along with Bulmers. These drinks derive their popularity from their wide availability, general R.R.P. of less than 5 euro and of course the ability to chugg them with ease. Whiskey remains a peripheral player, retaining cult status but only drank regularly by the minority, whilst retaining its status as a special victory drink of sorts.
