2007 Giro d'Italia

2007 Giro d'Italia

The 2007 Giro d'Italia cycle race took place from May 12 until June 3, 2007. The race kicked off in the island of Sardinia and finished in Milan three weeks later. It featured five mountain top finishes, of which one was an individual time trial, and visited France and Austria. Italian stars Damiano Cunego, Danilo di Luca, Gilberto Simoni, Stefano Garzelli, Riccardo Riccò and Paolo Savoldelli had set this race as one of their major goals for the 2007 season.

For the first time since 1994, the race had a competition for best young rider, who wears the "maglia bianca". This was won by Andy Schleck of Team CSC

During the race, Alessandro Petacchi was found guilty of using salbutamol after a doping control at May 23. Petacchi had a certificate to use salbutamol in the treatment of asthma, but his level of salbutamol was extremely high. In July 2007, the Italian Cycling Federation (FCI) ruled that Petacchi gave good reasons for this high level. The Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) argued that Petacchi should be suspended for the high level of salbutamol, and send the case to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, the sporting world's highest court. In May 2008, the CAS overruled the decision from the FCI, and Petacchi was stripped from his 2007 results, including all his results from the 2007 Giro d'Italia.cite web|url=http://www.velonews.com/article/75891/cas-suspends-petacchi|title=CAS suspends Petacchi|date=May 7, 2008|author=Charles Pelkey|publisher=VeloNews]
