pseudoarchaeology written by Christopher Knight (co-author of "The Hiram Key ") and Alan Butler and was first published in the UK in 2004. It describes a theory concerning theneolithic period before approximately 3200 BC), in which an intellectual elite in theBritish Isles used astronomical, mathematical, and technical knowledge more advanced than generally believed to have existed at that time. It was published by Watkins Publishing and the cover was illustrated by Kevin Jones Associates.Overview
"Civilization One" holds that the historically recognized civilizations must have been based on the diffusion of ideas from a currently unknown civilization, citing similarities between units of measure across different cultures as evidence. It relies heavily on the work of
Alexander Thom and his concept of the megalithic yard.Megalithic units
Knight hypothesizes that the megalithic yard (MY) is part of a system of measurements that is based on the division of a whole into 366 (megalithic degrees) which are further divided into 60 minutes and 6 seconds, a system also seen in the
Minoan civilization . He contends that the MY was created by using apendulum calibrated by the motion ofVenus during maximum retrograde motion, which would require no measuring rods (a lack of which was a criticism of Thom’s work) and explain the uniformity of the MY across large geographical areas. Knight cites the existence of small weights found near megalithic sites which he believes are pendulum bobs, and also describes measures ofvolume andratio derived from the MY. He also compares these derived units to the imperialpint and pound.Release details
