Holy Sonnets

Holy Sonnets

The Holy Sonnets, also known as the Divine Meditations or Divine Sonnets, are a series of nineteen poems by the English metaphysical poet John Donne. Twelve of them were published in the 1633 collection "Songs and Sonnets"; others were published in later collections. Most of the sonnets are thought to have been written between 1609 and 1611, although one is an elegy to Donne's wife Anne, who died in 1617. ["Holy Sonnets". "Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature". EBSCOhost Literary Reference Center. Retrieved on September 3, 2008.]

One of the sonnets (traditionally listed as "Holy Sonnet X", but sometimes listed as "Holy Sonnet VI") contains the famous line, "Death, be not proud, though some have called thee / Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so".
