After nearly a decade of being considered one of the nation’s top ten pole vaulters, Russ Buller earned the first national championship of his career in 2006, though it did not come easily. Buller and reigning Olympic Games silver medalist Toby Stevenson ended up clearing the identical height of 5.80m/19-0.25, but Buller was declared the victor on fewer misses during the competition. His performance marked his first clearance over the 19-foot barrier since setting his personal best of 5.81m/19-0.75i in 2001. Buller dedicated his victory to his brother who had recently died. A collegiate star at LSU where he majored in Kinesiology (Exercise Physiology), Buller won the NCAA Outdoor and Indoor titles in 2000 and captured six SEC conference titles during his career. The indoor and outdoor High School national pole vault champion in 1996, Buller is the Louisiana prep record holder both indoors (5.03/16-6.25) and outdoors (5.18/17-0). A high school All-American, Buller was a three-time state and district champion in the vault. He also owns Westlake High School’s records in the 40 yd. 4.3, 100 (10.6), 200 (21.7), and part of 4x100m relay (42.6). An all-around athlete, Buller won four letters in both track and field and football, and two in baseball…won Arlin Williams 110% Award in football and was a second team All-District receiver his senior season.
