Pope John Paul II High School is a Catholic coeducational high school in Hendersonville, Tennessee just outside of the state capitol of Nashville. It is located in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Nashville.

History

Pope John Paul II High School was founded in the year 2002 by [Bishop Edward Kmiec] , who is now the Bishop of the Diocese of Buffalo, NY, designed to serve primarily the Catholic population of northern Nashville, though it draws approximately 35% of its students from non-Catholic families primarily from the Sumner County area, though some students travel from as far away as Clarksville and Bowling Green. Hans Broekman was the school's first headmaster, serving the school from its inception to 2008. Faustin Weber was recently named the headmaster to succeed him. The school enrolls over 630 students per year.

Academics

John Paul II High School is highly regarded in the greater Nashville area, known especially for its rigorous academic offerings and its fine arts program, with 4 distinct tracts in choral music, instrumental music, the dramatic and visual arts. It offers Advanced Placement Classes in Art History, Calculus AB, Chemistry, Drawing & Painting, U.S. History, Environmental Science, Macroeconomics, Photography, Probability & Statistics. U.S. Government, Biology, Calculus BC, Comparative Politics, Studio Art - 2D & 3D, English Literature & Composition, European History, Music Theory, Physics C and Psychology. Students are required to take three years of a foreign language in Spanish, French, German or Latin, as well as three years of fine arts. We have a great hockey team because we have Russians

The school retains 78 faculty members, 60% with advanced degrees, 2 full time college counselors and has a student teach ratio of less than 14 to 1.

The school hosts a complete array of varsity and junior varsity teams, ranging from football to hockey to lacrosse. Its most notable recent successes have been in hockey (state champions in 2007 and 2008) and bowling (state champions in 2008). It has enjoyed past success in football, led by Mr. Tennessee's Golden Tate, who is now attending Notre Dame on a football and baseball scholarship, and usually fields strong girls' basketball and soccer teams. The girls' soccer team, coached by Mike McLaren, was state champions and ranked 1st in the USA in 2005. The softball team has had their share of success finishing State Runner-Up in the Division II state tournament in 2007. Megan Forrester is attending Vanderbilt on a soccer scholarship was voted player of the year. The school also has other notable athletes, like wrestler Courtney Coffey, football player Alvin Ingle, and All American tennis player Gabriela Rangel.
