- Andreas Anagnostakis
Dr Andreas Anagnostakis (1826–
March 27 1897 ) was a Greek physician.He was born on the island of
Antikythera in 1826 to a family that originated inAnopolis ,Sfakia ,Crete . He graduated from the Medical School of theUniversity of Athens onJune 26 1849 and did his ophthalmological training inParis andBerlin . He is credited for the development of the hand-heldophthalmoscope , thus significantly advancing the design and use of the original ophthalmoscope invented byHermann von Helmholtz . Besides his fame as a great doctor and scientist, Anagnostakis was an accomplished author and poet. He also served as Dean of the Medical School of the University of Athens (1871-72 and 1876-770) and as President (Rector) of the University (1877-79).Anagnostakis died in Athens.
