Ilmington is a village and parish in the county of Warwickshire, England, in the north Cotswolds, eight miles south of Stratford-upon-Avon and four miles west of Shipston-on-Stour. It is near several other villages including Chipping Campden, Shipston-on-Stour, Mickleton and Armscote. It is also close Gloucestershire, Worcestershire and Oxfordshire. It is nestled at the bottom of the Campden Hills. The old stone cottages are surrounded by green fields.

In the 2001 census the parish had a population of 734.

History and geography of the village

Ilmington used to be known as Elmington because it once was home to lots of elm trees. When the Dutch Elm Disease came to England it killed the trees and now elm trees cannot be found in the village.

Ilmington is situated just beneath the Ilmington Downs which is the highest place in Warwickshire.

Ilmington and the Cotswolds

Ilmington is situated in the Cotswolds (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). Ilmington is the first town in the Cotswolds when approaching from the north (and the last when coming from the south).

Amenities

The village has several amenities including;
**A primary school - Ilmington Church of England Junior and Infants School
**A village hall
**Shop - Both the shop and the Post Office are situated in the same building.
**Pubs - There are two tradional country pubs: The Howard Arms and The Red Lion.
**Playing field - Where sporting events and the summer fair are held.


Ilmington is home to the Ilmington Revolution FC.

The church

The village parish of St Mary the Virgin is a Church of England church.

Robert Thompson

Robert Thompson carved the pulpit and pews for the church. He also carved his signature mice onto many of these pieces. 11 such objects can be found through-out the church.

The Apple Map and June Hobson

June Hobson was a gardener and artist who lived in the village. He inspired the young an old villagers to embroider the map which is a copy of old maps which showed where all of the orchards in the village were. It shows that there were an unusually large amount of small orchards in the village.

The Apple Map is displayed in the village church.

Ilmington Apple Day

The day starts with guided viewing of the Apple Map in the church before a search for some of the 38 different varieties grown in the village.

Hundreds of people come to the Apple Days which celebrate the history of the small orchards in the village.

The Apple Walk

The children at the local school who were working on the Apple Map devised the walk.

The walk is a mile long but is steep with stiles and can be muddy.

There is an easier walk on the flat with no mud.

Other interesting facts

*The Elizabethan poet Sir Thomas Overbury was born at Compton Scorpion Manor, just south of the village.

*Residents of the village are known as "Ilmingtonians".
