Allan Richard Pred (1936 – 2007) was an internationally-known American
geographer and professor at theUniversity of California at Berkeley ["Allan Pred: Friend and Rebel" by Richard Walker, Michael Watts in "Antipode" 39 (2), 388–92 (1997) [http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1467-8330.2007.00531.x toll access] ] He wrote over 20 books and monographs, translated into seven languages, and over 70 articles and book chapters.Pred was born in the Bronx, New York City, in 1936, He enrolled at
Antioch College in 1953, at age 16, and graduated first in his class in 1957. He received his Ph.D. in 1962 from theUniversity of Chicago , and then became an Assistant Professor at Berkeley, and was appointed full professor in 1971 at the age of 34. He served as the chair of the UC Berkeley Department of Geography between 1979 and 1988, and was made a Professor of the Graduate School in 2005, the most senior Berkeley position.He met his wife Hjördis, in San Francisco in 1962; they moved between Berkeley and Sweden on a yearly basis, raising bi-lingual children.
