Palingenetic ultranationalism

Palingenetic ultranationalism

Palingenetic Ultranationalism is a theory concerning generic fascism formulated by professor Roger Griffin. The key elements are that fascism can be defined by its core myth, namely that of national rebirth, or palingenesis. The idea was first put forth in "The Nature of Fascism" (St. Martin's Press, 1991; Routledge, 1993) and has been expanded in a paper titled 'Staging The Nation's Rebirth: The Politics and Aesthetics of Performance in the Context of Fascist Studies' in G. Berghaus (ed.) "Fascism and Theatre" (Berghahn, Oxford, 1996), pp. 11-29. This is available on the internet in the pdf format.

Griffin claims that the unique blend of palingenesis and ultra-nationalism differentiates fascism from other revolutionary ideologies and para-fascism. This is what he calls the "fascist minimum" [ Staging the nation's rebirth p. 4] without which there is no fascism.
