Rome-Civitavecchia railway line

The Rome-Civitavecchia railway line is one of the oldest railways in Italy, in the Papal State, opening in 1859 and consists of 72,6 km in length.

History

In October 1856 the start of works by the "Società Generale delle Strade Ferrate Romane", headed by the haulage contractor Mr. Hubert Debrousse, French engineer, and 950 workers were engaged in 27 rail road yard. In thirty months the railroad and two stations were built, the Porta Portese Station in Rome and the temporary Civitavecchia Station.

The line was opened for service on April 16, 1859, two trips a day from Rome and two trips a day from Civitavecchia, with 2 hours and half of trip time.

The railway equipment was: eleven French-built steam locomotives (Cail & C. - Paris) and one England-built steam locomotive, with 21 passenger carriages of first class, 25 passenger carriages of second class. The rails were bought at "Losh, Wilson & Bell Company" of Newcastle, England.

On July 2, 1860, was opened for service the new "Civitavecchia Station" and began the construction of the last section from Civitavecchia to the north border of Tuscany, inaugurated and opened for service on June, 22, 1867.
