Haughley Castle

Haughley Castle

Haughley Castle was situated in the village of Haughley, some 4 km north-west of the town of Stowmarket, Suffolk (gbmapping|TM025624).

It is also been known as, or has been recorded in historical documents as Haganet, Hawghlee or Hegenoth Castle. It was a motte and bailey castle which was abandoned in 1173 during the revolt of 1173-1174.

The surviving motte, which stands at 80 feet tall with a diameter of 80 feet at the top, is one of the largest surviving mottes in Britain.
