bivalve mollusc of the FamilyVeneridae endemic toNew Zealand . It is found all around New Zealand's coast on sandy bottoms in shallow water. The shell is large, ovate-subquadrate, moderately convex, solid, sculptured with rather distant concentriclamellae , that are often frilled to weakly spinose at theposterior end. The lamellae commence at about 10 mm down from the beaks, after which they are from 3 to 4 per cm.Coloration is creamy-white externally, often violet tinged at the beaks, interior white, often diffused with violet.
Maximum shell height is 54 mm, and length 63 mm.
