La Liga Filipina

La Liga Filipina

La Liga Filipina (The Philippine League) was a progressive organization created by Dr. Jose Rizal in the Philippines in a house at Ilaya Street, Tondo in 1892. Its motto was "Unus Instar Onium" ("One Like All").

The aims were:

*To unite the whole archipelago into one vigorous and homogenous organization;
*Mutual protection in every want and necessity;
*Defense against all violence and injustice;
*Encouragement of instruction, agriculture, and commerce; and
*Study and application of reforms.

Rizal conceived the idea of establishing a civic association composed of Filipinos. He wrote its constitution with the help of Jose Ma. Basa who was with him in Hong Kong. The motto was "Unus Instar Omnium"(One Like All). Among its members were Deodato Arellano, Andres Bonifacio and Apolinario Mabini, among others.

Fall of the La Liga Filipina

Every effort was made to make it a peaceful organization, the Spanish authorities considered it dangerous and on the night of July 6, 1892, Rizal was secretly arrested four days after its creation. The following day, Governor-General Eulogio Despujol ordered Rizal's deportation to Dapitan.

After Rizal's arrest, La Liga Filipina became inactive. Then it was reorganized by Domingo Franco and Andres Bonifacio. The society eventually split up into two: Cuerpo de Compromisarios, which pledged continued moral and financial support to the La Solidaridad in Spain, and the Katipunan, which evolved into the militant arm of the revolution in the Philippines.
