Llanedeyrn

Llanedeyrn

Llanedeyrn is a district of the city of Cardiff, Wales.

"Early History"

The name "Llanedeyrn" is believed to be derived from a sixth century monk and a Celtic saint named St. Edeyrn. During the sixth century, St. Edeyrn and a fellow monk, St. Isan, were given the task of spreading the faith and establishing places of worship. The first location chosen by the two monks was LLanishen. This area commemorates the first of the two monks St. Islan (Llans + Isan) and the other St. Ederyn (the word "Llans" means worship or place of worship in the welsh language).

St. Edeyrn was reputed to have travelled widely and as a result there are churches in North and South Wales dedicated to his memory. St. Edeyrn gathered together a community of about 300 that lived and worshiped in the Llanederyn area. The present Llanedeyrn Church still stands on the foundations of the old place of worship. Today, one can still see signs of the Norman history in the walls and windows of the church.

The main pub in the area was The Unicorn (adjacent to St.Edeyrn Church), which dates back to the fifteenth century, and was owned by the Davies family until 1966 when it was sold to the Ansells brewery chain. It is still thriving today, and although it is altered, you can still imagine how it was years ago.

"Recent History"

In the late 1960's, Cardiff Council decided to create additional low cost housing in Llanederyn, with an estimated 3,500 homes to be erected for 12,000 people (2000 homes owned by the city council and 1500 private homes). The first of the estates was opened in 1968. Cardiff Council provided a selection of prefabricated and terraced houses and numerous 2, 3 and multi-storied flats were constructed.
