The dargah (which is also known as shrine) is that of the saint, Hazrat Thameemul Ansari (rah). The dargah is located in the coastal town of Kovalam which is located in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Though India has hundreds of dargahs, this one receives special attention and following as it is that of a disciple of the Islamic prophet, Muhammad. The dargah has an area of convert|3|acre|m2.

2. Hazrat Thameemul Ansari (Rizwan Allahi Tha'alahi Alaihim Ajmaeen) Biography
"2.1 Background"
Syedina, Hazrath Thameemul Ansari (Rah) was born in Al-Madina Al-Munawara and joined in Islam in Al Makkah Al Mukarrama before the Hijra of Muhammad. He belonged to the tribe of Al-Kajraj and his father was Yu-Aar. He is one among 313 Sahabas who participated in Battle of Badr.

He stayed in the world of Jinns (A'lam-ul-Jinn) to teach Jinns about Islam for five years, which was commanded by Muhammad. Before his visit to world of Jinns (A'lam-ul-Jinn), he was gifted with a holy ring which was bearing "Asma-ul-Zalzalooth" by Muhammad and was said that it would be on his holy finger till the day of Qayamath, when he meets Muhammad in Mahshar Maidhan.

"2.3 His Travels"
He visited Asia continent during the time of Caliph Hazrath Umar Farook (Rah). The kingdom of Sindh was under the holy feet of Hazrat Thameemul Ansari (Rah) for 18 years.

"2.4 His Eventual Journey to India"
Before his passing, he had instructed his disciples to cast his remains into the sea after his death. After the last instructions from Syedina, Hazrath Thameemul-Ansari (Rah) as stated above, his companions or disciples did the same and it is said that the remains was in the sea for about 5 years and it was guarded by the big fishes during this time. Eventually, one big fish brought the remains nearer to sea shore of Kovalam."
On the other hand, according to some accounts, the Nawab of Wallajah, Nawab Muhammed Saadatullah Khan, had a dream in which Hazrat Syedina Thameemul Ansari (Rah) requested him to proceed to Kovalam, where he would find the latter's remains on Kovalam beach, and asked him to bury it there. When the Nawab reached the beach, he found the remains and when he opened the same, he found the sacred body fresh along with some documents, which proved that he was the sacred disciple of Muhammad.

"2.5 The construction of the Dargah"
The Nooraniyyath reflected from the sacred face of Hazrat Syedina Thameemul Ansari (rah) touched the hearts of the all who participated in the funeral cermony. The Nawab duly buried the sacred body of this great disciple of Muhammad and built the Dargah Shareef at the site.

3.Sacredness of Dargah Shareef

The Dargah Shareef of Syedina Hazrath Thameemul Ansari (rah) is a sacred place which has solved the problems of large number of people from all walks of life. The Dargah Shareef is a highly Spritual Markaz of Roohaniyats, Nooraniyath, Rahmaths and Barkats of Allah which one can come to know only if they visit the Dargah Shareef and in the entire journey one can notice great rahmats and barkats.
The Zahura of Syedina, Hazrath Thameemul Ansari (rah) is very immense and Kashf-o-Karamats and Taskara are realised in all the states here. The popularity of this in India and the Faizan is more on common people and all are being bestowed with great karam and Dhuas from this great darbar of Sahabi-e-Rasool Sallalahu Alaihi wa Sallam, Hazrath Thameem-ul-Ansari (Rah).
People from all walks of life, creed and faith regard Hazrat Thameemul Ansari(rah) as very powerful and go to the "dargah" to request his intercession with God on their behalf. [Narayanan, Vasudha. 4. Activities at Dargah Shareef
The first Thursday after the first full moon of each month is a day of devotion. Though the "dargah" is open from 5.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m., some devotees spend the night there.

"Ceremonies during Sandhal/Urs Mubarak are as follows:-"

Flag Hoisting:- 30th Zul-Qa'dah, after Isha Namaz, The holy flag is taken for procession from Dargah shareef around 9 p.m and is hoisted in the Nishan-e-Pak after Salam Ba'ith and Dhua

Sandhal Mubarak:- 15th Zul-Hajj, after Isha Namaz, Sandhal Mubarak is taken for procession from Dargah shareef around 1 a.m and it reaches Dargah shareef prior to Fajr namaz and applied on the Mazar-e-Mubarak after Salam Ba'ith and Dhua.

Urs Mubarak:- 15th Zul-Hajj, after Maghirb Namaz, Khatmul Quran fathiha is conducted. Subsequently, the names of Badr Sahabas and Moulood Shareef are recited.

Qawwali programme:- 15th Zul-Hajj, after Isha Namaz, Qawwali is performed in Urdhu as well as in Tamil.

5.Kovalam
Kovalam shareef is near Mamallapuram, about 30 km from Chennai, which is in Tamil Nadu, India.Kovalam means a grove of coconut trees. It is a beach town on the Arabian Sea located near Mamallapuram, about 30 km from Chennai, Kanjipuram District, Tamil Nadu, India
Two of the great specialities of Kovalam shareef are Red Sweet Boondhi and pink flowers, which are nowhere available in India. They're available just in front of Dargah shareef and people buy them prior to offering Fathiha in the Darbar Shareef. When boondhi is sold, it's normally kept in special leaves and folded for preservation purpose.

Bus services to Kovalam:- If one wants to go to Kovalam, he/she first needs to reach Chennai, from there, plenty of State Government buses run to Kovalam. You can catch these buses either from Chennai Mofussil bus terminus (CMBT) or Paris Bus Stand in Chennai. CMBT, Asia's Biggest Bus Terminus and the largest Bus Station in Chennai, is at Koyambedu, spread over an area of 37 acre. You can reach this place anywhere from Chennai in 45 minutes provided the traffic is not that heavy and pick buses to Kovalam shareef.
