Athletics

Mum Day Tradition

Hoban has an original school event called Mum Day which is held every year on the Friday before the rival football game against St. Vincent - St. Mary High School. The rival game is held at the Rubber Bowl at the University of Akron. The winner of the Game is presented the honor of keeping the Shillelagh Stick at their high school for the next year. The St. Vincent - St. Mary football team won the 2007 game 33-28 for only the second time since 1996, breaking a nine-game losing streak.The St. Vincent - St. Mary Fighting Irish football team also one the game 20-12 on September 12, 2008.

Mum Day is a tradition where all students are to be silent all day at school, except for class time. Then at the end of the day everyone goes to the Gym where it is decorated so much that you can not see the other side of the gym and the students let out the pent up energy from the day of silence at a rally anticipating the football game.
