footnotes =Carrie Furnace is a derelict former
blast furnace located along theMonongahela River inRankin, Pennsylvania . It had formed a part of theHomestead Steel Works . The Carrie Furnaces were built in 1884 and they operated until 1982. A national architectural competition will be held in 2007 to design a museum for the park site dedicated to the memory of
steel inPittsburgh .In November 2006, Carrie Furnaces 6 and 7 won designation as a
National Historic Landmark thanks in part to US Representative Mike Doyle.References
