Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) ("Getulio Vargas Foundation") is a prestigious Brazilian think tank focused on academic research, undergraduate and graduate courses, consulting, and public services. Its main areas of work are:

*Business Law,
*Law & Economics.

It also one of the top Brazilian colleges of higher education, offering majors in Business, Economics and Law, along with MBAs, masters and doctorates. FGV's Business and Law courses are self-allegedly the best in Latin America. FGV has been the "alma mater" of many influential people in Brazil's economic and political elite, including several Presidents of the Central Bank of Brazil. Fundação Getulio Vargas, FGV is a pioneer in the teaching of Business Administration and Business law in Brazil and is a Brazilian center of teaching, research, publication and consulting in the field of Administration and recently, as well as in the Law field.

The Fundação Getulio Vargas was founded in 20 December 1944. Its initial goal was to create a qualified pool of managers that would work in civil service or private businesses. The school offers a complete range of courses for professional training at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The school has campi in the cities of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Brasília.

Through partnerships with the most important Brazilian companies and government institutions, FGV-EAESP offers modern facilities in its classrooms, distance learning center and computer laboratories. These partnerships also allow the active exchange of students and professors with schools and universities in other countries, along with supporting the scholarship fund. Also, the institution is highly regarded by its former students. Although it charges expensive tuition fees, the school provides funding for applicants in need.

History

1950s

Implementation of formal training in administration in the country: first undergraduate course in administration - a pioneering venture in Latin America.

1960s

Initial steps for institutionalizing graduate courses in administration in the country. Launch of the Master of Public Administration course in the Country.Pioneering initiative in adopting the credit-based system instead of the yearly curriculum. EBAPE, with its present structure is established: Education-Research-Technical Consultancy. Editorial program sponsored by the Ford Foundation, resulting in an unprecedented number of books and papers on public administration.

1970s

Broadening of the scope of external relations; both in Brazil and abroad. Consolidation of the Master's course, with the inclusion of public policy. Increase in the scope of lato sensu graduate courses and several programs of managerial training. Installation of EBAPE/FGV activities in the head offices of FGV in Brasília, marking the beginning of a more intensive presence of the Foundation in that city. Participation as a founder member of the National Association of Graduate Programs in Public Administration.

1980s

Expansion of graduate programs. Expansion of EBAPE/FGV activities: over 2,000 students in several cities around Brazil. Broadening of the international frontiers of the school: international relations with the U.S, Europe and Latin America and affiliation to international organisms: CLADEA, INTERMAN, CLAD. Permanent presence of faculty members abroad.

1990s

Emphasis on the production and systematic structuring of knowledge on administration, seeking to maintain its pioneering spirit and position. Consolidation of graduate programs and intensification of activities in consultancy and qualification of human resources in public administration and the business sector of the State. Solid growth in continuing education in business administration. Development of a regional-based strategy providing logistical support to state and municipal public administration. Emphasis on international penetration. International partnerships with the United Nations(UN). Support for OEA(OAS) and CLAD programs.. Reconciling its academic vocation with the ability to provide services, namely a quest for financial equilibrium. Institution of the Ph.D. in Administration program..
