Torrey Westrom

Torrey Westrom

Torrey Westrom (R-MN) is the state representative for Minnesota District 11A. First elected in 1996, he was the first blind person elected to public office.

A native of Elbow Lake, Westrom enjoys popular bipartisan support for his voting record that reflects the wishes of his constituents. He is known for mailing out a list of upcoming bills to be voted on, and following the wishes of his constituents, even if they go against what his fellow Republican representatives will be voting.

Westrom violated a large portion of his voter base when he became a vocal supporter of an anti-gay marriage bill, despite the wishes of his constituents [http://minnesota.publicradio.org/projects/ongoing/votetracker/issue_view.php?id=9&sort=vote] . He regained the support of some by voting against public funding for a Minnesota Twins stadium [http://minnesota.publicradio.org/projects/ongoing/votetracker/issue_view.php?id=52] .
