Sawiri, Lebanon

Sawiri, Lebanon

Sawiri is a mid-sized town (village) in the eastern part of Lebanon. It is located on the Syrian border, in governorate of Beqaa in the foothills of the eastern mountains. Currently, Sawiri's population is over 10,000 people, and countless Sawiris live around the world, especially in the USA, Brazil, Venezuela, Canada and France. Many Sawiris emigrated in the 1900s and many of their offspring still come to the town to vacation and spend a quiet time in it. Most Sawiris are neutral and did not get involved in the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990). They are friendly and very hospitable.

Sawiri is an agriculture and service oriented town. Most people own their land and come from a farming background. Sawiri is most famous for its production of lentils, figs, and Armenian cucumbers (mikthi). However, olive and cherry trees have been grown rapidly as well as grape vines of all sorts in the last 3 decades.

The weather in Sawiri is stunning, especially in the Summer. Its location between two mountains and its elevation of 1400 meters above sea level give it cool dewy mornings in the Summer and breezy afternoons.

Sawiri is very close to Anjar and Baalbeck where ancient history can be seen in the Roman and Omayad ruins.
