Extra-curricular activities

Garden Spot Performing Arts

Garden Spot High School is quite possibly most famous for its theater program, "Garden Spot Performing Arts" (GSPA). GSPA began in 1967, founded by then-High School English Teacher Stanley D. Deen. Deen lead the organization for 30 years. Credit also goes to Deen's earliest collaborators, fellow Garden Spot teachers Bill Reilly (set and lighting design), Francis A. Palumbo (costume design and make up), David Martin (set construction) and Marlin Houck (music director). Deen retired from teaching and directing at Garden Spot in 1997. To honor his legacy as both a teacher and theater director, Garden Spot's auditorium was named after him in the year 2000.

Since its founding in 1967, GSPA has been a favorite after-school activity for literally thousands of students. Every year, scores of students work both on stage and behind the scenes to produce quality theater experiences for the community. Arguably, GSPA's most famous alumnus is Robert Hoshour, who went on to perform in several Broadway musicals, including the original cast of Andrew Lloyd Weber's long-running hit show "Cats".

On February 16, 2008, GSPA presented A MUSICAL RETROSPECTIVE -- a celebration of GSPA's 40-year history, featuring performances by GSPA Students and Alumni, including Tim Witmer '71, Barb Simmers Witmer '71, Kathy Mellinger Long '73, Claudia Herr Beebe '74, John Kulp '74, Eldon Stoltzfus '74, Craig Styer '75, Robert Hoshour '75, Thomas Beebe '79, Gail Waldrop Ertzgard '82, with little Karoline Fitz, Travis Eby '90, Heather Hainley Martin '92, Steven Hoover '93, Lori Moyer McCarty '95, Hillary Martin '97, Joshua Martin '00, Wendi Stoltzfus '06, Christopher Orr '08, Carley Myers '09, and Bradley Canull '11. Deen also appeared in several performances. Music was performed and directed by Richard Fitz '79, a Garden Spot faculty member in the Department of Music, and GSPA's orchestral conductor. At the performance, Deen was honored by a Meritorious Commendation from the students, alumni and administration of the Eastern Lancaster County School District, presented by the current officers of the Garden Spot Performing Arts and Ms. Hillary Martin, GSPA's coordinator.

To further commemorate GSPA's 40th Anniversary, Mr. Deen will return to direct GSPA's Spring 2008 Production of "Annie", which will run April 10-13, 2008.

Block scheduling shift

GSHS has decided to shift to block scheduling for the 2008-2009 school year, and for all following years. Students are upset about this decision as they feel they were "never asked" for this large change to occur, and there was a possibility of an anti-block research committee having their results completely disregarded. The administration backs their decision saying that almost all other districts in the area have gone to this manner of scheduling.
