John Harris (
September 26 ,1760 –November, 1824) was a member of theU.S. House of Representatives fromNew York .John Harris (cousin of Robert Harris) was born at Harris Ferry, Pennsylvania (now Harrisburg). He moved to
Aurelias, New York , in 1789, and operated the first ferry acrossCayuga Lake . He acted as an Indian interpreter, and opened the first store and tavern inCayuga County, New York , in 1789. He was appointed a colonel in the New York State Militia in 1806.Harris was elected as a
Democratic-Republican to the Tenth Congress. He commanded the One Hundred and Fifty-eighth New York Regiment in theWar of 1812 . He died inBridgeport, New York , in November 1824. Interment in the local cemetery.ources
