John Harris (New York)

John Harris (September 26, 1760–November, 1824) was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York.

John Harris (cousin of Robert Harris) was born at Harris Ferry, Pennsylvania (now Harrisburg). He moved to Aurelias, New York, in 1789, and operated the first ferry across Cayuga Lake. He acted as an Indian interpreter, and opened the first store and tavern in Cayuga County, New York, in 1789. He was appointed a colonel in the New York State Militia in 1806.

Harris was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Tenth Congress. He commanded the One Hundred and Fifty-eighth New York Regiment in the War of 1812. He died in Bridgeport, New York, in November 1824. Interment in the local cemetery.
