Joseph Murphy (May 20, 1898 - December 16, 1981) was a New Thought author, philosopher and teacher.

Murphy lectured and taught to hundreds of thousands of people all over the world for over fifty years on the powers of the subconscious mind and prosperity. Joseph Denis Murphy was born in Ballydehob, county Cork, Ireland on May 20, 1898. He was educated in Ireland and England. After being trained as a chemist, he emigrated to the United States, travelling in steerage on the steamship "Cedric"; he was inspected at Ellis Island on his arrival in April 1922. Years of research studying the world’s major religions convinced him that some great untapped power is within you and all of us.

Joseph Murphy's most popular book is "The Power of Your Subconscious Mind", which he described in simple terms how one can use one's thoughts to change circumstances and to attain certain goals in life. Until today, this book still remains as the 'guide book' on the topic of using one's subconscious mind to change one's life. "The Power of Your Subconscious Mind" has been translated into 17 different languages. Joseph Murphy had a daily radio program and authored more than thirty books.Typically, his books are filled with stories after stories of how people who applied his method of prayer and imagination have achieved results in the most remarkable ways.

Murphy himself noted that, as a young man, he used his subconscious mind to completely heal himself of a skin cancer.

Dr. Murphy was Minister-Director of the Church of Divine Science in Los Angeles for 28 years, where his lectures were attended by over a thousand people almost every Sunday.
