History
Tsuji Gettan was born in the first year of the Keian (1648) in the town of Masugimura, Omi (Shiga Prefecture) as the second son of a local samurai. Known as Sukeshige (sometimes Sukemochi), upon his "gempukku " he chose the name Gettan.Leaving home at the age of thirteen in the third year of Manji (1660), Gettan traveled to Kyoto where he prepared to train at the dojo of the
Yamaguchi-ryū style of swordsmanship. Learning under Bokushinsai Yamaguchi, who had studiedKashima Shinto-ryū and afterwardsShinkage-ryū andAwaga-ryū , Tsuji Gettan received "kaiden" (full transmission) at the age of twenty-six, in the second year of Enpo (1674).Notes
