He was recalled by St Helens to play in the 2010 Grand Final vs Wigan Warriors, which St Helens lost, despite a valiant performance by Smith.
Before rugby he had a youth career with Everton FC and appeared in the reserve team occasionally.
Smith was revealed as one of the Crusaders' new recruits on 26 November 2008, and played for the Welsh franchise in their first season in the Super League.
