"Powelliphanta rossiana rossiana", known as one of the amber snails, is a subspecies of large, carnivorous land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusc in the family Rhytididae.

This is an endangered subspecies.

Distribution

This subspecies is endemic to the South Island of New Zealand. It is found at altitudes of between 2,900 and 3,600 ft on hills in Westland in the South Island.

hell description

The shell is subglobose, thin, smooth and glossy, both above and below, and narrowly umbilicated. Its colour is dark greenish-brown, irregularly axially streaked with slightly darker brown.

The shell diameter is up to 38 mm, and the height is up to 25 mm.

Conservation status

"Powelliphanta rossiana rossiana" is classified by the New Zealand Department of Conservation as being "Nationally Endangered".
