- Wynn Baronets
There have been two Baronetcies created for persons with the surname Wynn, one in the
Baronetage of England and one in theBaronetage of Great Britain . One creation is extant as of 2008.The Wynn Baronetcy, of Gwydir in the County of Carnarvon, was created in the Baronetage of England on
29 June 1611 for John Wynn. The members of this line were heirs to theAberffraw claim to the Principality of Gwynedd and Wales as direct descendents ofOwain Gwynedd . The family continued to be prominent in politics, all the baronets save Owen sat as Members of Parliament, often for Carnarvon or Carnarvonshire. This creation became extinct in 1719, on the death of the fifth baronet. Wynnstay, nearRuabon , passed to Jane Thewell and her husbandSir Watkin Williams-Wynn, 3rd Baronet , who added the surname Wynn to his own in honor of his wife's princely heritage (seeWilliams-Wynn Baronets ). Mary Wynn, only child and heiress of the fourth Baronet, was the wife ofRobert Bertie, 1st Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven . Sir Peter Burrell, husband of their great-granddaughter Priscilla, was createdBaron Gwydyr in 1796. The Wynn Baronetcy, of Bodvean in the County of Carnarvon, was created in the Baronetage of Great Britain on25 October 1742 . For more information on this creation, seeBaron Newborough .
