The 1993 Commonwealth of Independent States Cup was the first edition of this competition. It was won by Spartak Moscow after winning easily Belarusian side Dinamo Minsk, then named "Belarus Minsk", in the final. Spartak would eventually win the next two editions of the tournament too.
As in subsequent editions of the CIS Cup, a Russian national team participated hors-concours as to compose four groups of four teams each for the Group stage. However, this wasn't achieved as Ukraine boycotted the tournament. It's to be noted also that Kairat Almaty refused to play against the Russian u-21 team.
