Anne Stewart, Marchioness of Londonderry

Anne Stewart, Marchioness of Londonderry

Amelia Anne Stewart, Marchioness of Londonderry (20 February 1772 – 12 February 1829) was an influential member of Regency London high society, as a Lady Patroness of Almack's, one of "the Ton's" first mixed-sex social clubs. She was a daughter of John Hobart, 2nd Earl of Buckinghamshire and the wife of Georgian statesman Robert Stewart, 2nd Marquess of Londonderry. The Marchioness of Londonderry was better known by her husband's courtesy title, Viscountess Castlereagh.

Life

She married Viscount Castlereagh, son of the 1st Marquess of Londonderry, in 1794, thus becoming Viscountess Castlereagh. Along with Lady Jersey, Dorothea Lieven, and others, she was a patroness of Almack's, one of the first mixed-gender social clubs in London.

Credited with having introduced the quadrille to London, Lady Castlereagh is also remembered for having Almack's doors closed, without exception, at eleven o'clock, even once turning away the Duke of Wellington. She had no children.

Lady Castlereagh is often mentioned in Regency novels, most famously in Georgette Heyer's Regency romances.
