Buka Barana

Buka Barana (also written in Kurdish as as: "Bûke barane") literally meaning "the bride of the rain"; is a traditional hand-made doll with a female face, used by Kurdish children (girls) to ask for rain.Children carrying the doll across the the region, sing some folclore poems; other people in turn respond with pouring some water over the doll. This tradition which is performed during seasons when people need raining, has roots in Kurdish mythology and culture.

A poem sung by the girls can often begin with:

:"Buke barane awî dewê":"derzî gewre kichanî dewê"...
