Justin Abdelkader is the son of Joseph and Sheryl Abdelkader. He
graduated from Mona Shores High School in 2005, where he was named to the all-state hockey team and awarded the Mr. Hockey award, given to the tophigh school ice hockey player in the state. His senior year he played for theCedar Rapids RoughRiders of theUSHL , where his contributions helped win theClark Cup , the USHL Championship.In the
2005 NHL Entry Draft , Justin was selected 42nd overall by theDetroit Red Wings . He was also selected to play for theUnited States Junior National Team at the IIHF World Junior Championship inSweden in 2007.cite web

In doing so, Abdelkader has forfeited his college eligibility and will not be with the Spartans for the 2008-09 season.
