Elfrid Payton was a colourful professional football player who had an all star career in the Canadian Football League.

A graduate of Grambling State University, Payton had a well travelled time in the CFL.

1990 to 1993 - He played with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, where he was an all star and James P. McCaffrey Trophy winner in 1993. The Bombers won the Grey Cup in 1990.

1994 - He started the season with the dreadful Shreveport Pirates, but finished with the Grey Cup finalists Baltimore CFLers, registering 27 tackles and 4 sacks.

1995 - He had 18 sacks as a Baltimore Stallions, being an all star and Grey Cup champion.

1996 to 1999 - As a Montreal Alouettes he was an all star in 1997, 1998 and 1999.

2000 - He returned to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

2001 - He was an all star with the Toronto Argonauts.

2002 to 2003 - He played with the Edmonton Eskimos, where he won the CFL's Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award and was an all star in 2002, and won a Grey Cup in 2003.

He played 189 regular season games, 17 playoff games and 4 Grey Cups. His 154 career sacks are second most in CFL history.
