- Bessemer Gold Medal
The Bessemer Gold Medal is an annual prize awarded by the
Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining for "outstanding services to the steel industry". It was established and endowed bySir Henry Bessemer in1874 . In2006 it was awarded toHarry Bhadeshia , Professor of Physical Metallurgy,University of Cambridge .For 2007, Mr L N Mittal, Chairman, CEO of ArcelorMittal (Worlds largest steel company). who is of Indian origin, was conferred this award. In 2008 Dr T Mukherjee of Tata Steel Group (Corus Included) is awarded with the prestigous award.Purpose
According to the institute's website, the award is given:
To the inventor or designer of any significant innovation in the processes employed in the manufacture of steel, or for innovation in the use of steel in manufacturing industry or the economy generally. For published work embodying the results of original research on the production of steel or the application to steel, results which have significant potential for economic benefit.
