The game featured the Western Division champions Chicago Bears (8-1-1). The Eastern Division champions were the Washington Redskins (6-3-1). The Redskins had the week earlier defeated the New York Giants 28-0 to determine the champs of the east. The Bears were led by their quarterback Sid Luckman while Sammy Baugh was the quarterback for the Redskins.
