Ginepri had a breakout year in 2005. In August, he reached the semifinals of an
ATP Masters Series tournament for the first time in his career, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He beat2005 French Open runner-upMariano Puerta in the first round,David Ferrer in the second round,1998 French Open championCarlos Moya in the third round, and two-time Grand Slam singles titlistMarat Safin in the quarterfinals. He then lost to World No. 1Roger Federer in the semifinals 4–6, 7–5, 6–4.His summer hardcourt record was 14-3 when he arrived two weeks later at the U.S. Open as an unseeded player. After winning his first two matches in straight sets, Ginepri put together a string of five set wins, defeating
Tommy Haas in the third round,Richard Gasquet in the fourth round, andGuillermo Coria in the quarterfinals. He then lost toAndre Agassi in the semifinals 6–4, 5–7, 6–3, 4–6, 6–3.
