The British Heavyweight Championship is the heavyweight title contested for in the professional wrestling promotion, XWA. The title was originally created and contested for in the Frontier Wrestling Alliance promotion.
The championship have been known as:
*FWA British Heavyweight Championship (1999 – 2007)
*(XWA) British Heavyweight Championship (2007 – current)
Trivia
*The belt for a short period was defended in a 2 out of 3 falls match, until 12 April 2005, when then champion Alex Shane signed a cast-iron contract to make new FWA British Title rules official and permanent. Now all future FWA British Title matches are best of one fall.
*The first Champion was Mark Sloan, who defeated Paul Glory in a tournament final on the 11 July 1999.
*American wrestler Christopher Daniels was the first non-British person to win the belt. This happened on 25 October 2002 in a Three Way match against Jody Fleisch & Doug Williams in London.
*On 22 March 2003 for the first time the belt changed hands in a match not held in the United Kingdom, when Doug Williams defeated Christopher Daniels in a match at the Murphy Recreation Center (Philadelphia, PA)
*On May 13, 2006 the FWA British Heavyweight Title belt was stolen from the Morecambe Dome immediately following the FWA event at the venue. It is believed the belt was taken from ringside at around 10.30pm in the immediate aftermath of the FWA versus All-Star show. The FWA offered a reward of £100 for information leading to the safe return of the championship belt.
*After the FWA lost the inter-promotional feud with IPW:UK and was forced to close in 2007, the promotion reopened as XWA and continued to recognise the title as the British Heavyweight Championship.
*Despite having been defended in multiple countries (including the USA) and therefore qualifying as a World Championship, the title has always been referred to as the British Heavyweight Championship.
Current champion
Sam Slam is the current champion having beaten Stevie Knight at "Last Fight At The Prom 2008" on the 6th of September 2008 at the Morecambe Dome in Morecambe, Lancashire.
