Bay of Istruga

Bay of Istruga is situated on south part of the Island of Korčula, near the village of Brna. The Bay of Istruga is 500 metres long and 150 metres wide and up to the middle of the bay there is a pile of curative mud, called "liman", which helps cure rheumatic ailments. The whole area is surrounded by evergreen forests and Mediterranean vegetation which could help people suffering from asthma. Today, this is the entertainment center for tourists from Brna, and also from nearby Priscapac, Prizba and Blato, with tennis terrain’s, a dancing terrace, restaurant, all in the immediate vicinity of sandy beaches. As is the case with other seaside settlements on the island of Korcula, the Bay of Brna was developed later than Smokvica because the inhabitants built their houses far a way from the sea from fear of pirate attacks.

During the time of the slave trade, 260 Turkish pirates disembarked from two galleys in Brna; they plundered the area and even set houses on fire in Smokvica, which this time could not be protected by the distance as the invaders felt strong in their numbers. This happened in the middle of a sunny summer day on the 10th of June 1715. A special atmosphere is given by the untouched nearby cove of Zitna, with its small sunny beach on which there is a Dalmatian wine cellar restaurant.
